La Gondola Trattoria, Göteborg
In 1973, La Gondola opened its doors on Kungsportsavenyn, the grandest boulevard in Gothenburg. With zebra-patterned arches in the ceiling and flirty Italian waiters, it did not take long before the restaurant was a hit. Being the first one to serve traditional Italian dishes, La Gondola attracted trendy locals and tourists who wanted to try the exotic pizza.
Over 40 years has gone by since the opening and La Gondola’s expertise in traditional Italian cooking has turned the place into a firm favourite with Gothenburgers. However, the interior did not keep up with trends, which made the restaurant old-fashioned compared to competitors.
The challenge for Stylt was to create an interior design that could attract a new generation of customers, whilst keeping the charming history of being the first Italian restaurant in the city alive.
Stylt went back to La Gondola’s core values of authentic Italian hospitality and traditional Italian cooking. We looked at current trends and found inspiration in contemporary Italian restaurants in New York, London and Paris.
The idea of an “urban trattoria” was born, where “urban” refers to vibrant city life and “trattoria” to a more relaxed and less formal dining experience. By creating this new concept, we found a way to communicate La Gondola’s history and heritage in a fresh and modern way.
The chosen interior design involves original details mixed with modern elements. A lot of attention was given to details, enhancing the feeling of a trattoria. As an example, stylish wine bottles and food products were put on display rather than stored away behind the bar. In order to create the unique floor, we researched classic Southern European mosaic patterns and interpreted these in a new way by combining mosaic tiles and wooden flooring.
To our surprise we found our absolute favourite part of the interior during the renovation. Hidden away behind plasterboards in the ceiling was a lovely glass dome from the 1930s. After careful restoration, the dome once again lets the beautiful light spread across the restaurant.
