The village of Flims is spectacularly located in the Glarus Alps in the eastern part of Switzerland, offering an unbeatable range of leisure activities all year round. Overlooking the village, the newbuilt Stenna Flims is an innovative experience centre with a great variety of activities and services, and fantastic ski-in/ski-out possibilities. Furthermore, the centre is home to The Hide, an independent hotel and a re-thought mountain resort, created by Stylt.
Designing the hotel, the overall architecture of the entire complex had to be taken into consideration, determining to what extent the hotel would match or contrast with the building. According to the design brief, the hotel was to stand as a clear contrast to the restrained and somewhat brutal architecture, fusing progressive alpinist interiors with cool luxe and voguish sophistication. Since the building complex itself lacked the traditional cozyness of the Alps, an important part of the task was to add a human fingerprint and create a sense of great hospitality.
The hotel features 47 warm and generous guestrooms, a deli, a restaurant, spa and an outdoor terrace, as well as a mountain concierge to facilitate equipment rentals, activity planning, and insider knowledge of the area. Much of the interior design, patterns and colours are inspired by the surrounding nature and the geodes of the Alps, the partially hollow rocks that hides a sparkling microcosm of colourful minerals. In the same way, The Hide holds the unexpected, just waiting to be discovered. It flirts with the cosy traditions of the Alps paired with a narrative of fresh design tones, botanicals and natural materials, as well as the clear, sharp and powerful colours of the geodes.
Entering The Hide, you get the feeling of finding and exploring a hidden gem, a clear contrast to the massive concrete building. This is a friendly, cozy and social place with lots of things to discover. You’re welcomed by a colourful entrance and lobby; its raw elegance with strong and sharp colours inspired by the geodes creates a striking ambience. The original raw and non-treated concrete ceiling in guest rooms is contrasted with the warm geometrical wall made in four shades of wood veneer, inspired by the geometrical form of the geodes. The bedrooms and suites show mastery in binding the traditional with modernity in creating habitat on the edge of funky, whilst giving alpine heritage a well-deserved hug. Glass, raw stone, intricate metalwork, fine wicker panels, and exquisite full-length wooden marquetry are softened by rich velvets of dusted pinks, mustard and botanical verts.
The result is a colourful, warm and relaxed hotel that attracts hotel guests and locals alike.
The Hide stands as a beacon of welcome, inspiration, relaxation, and social connection in Flims, a new meeting place for hotel guests and locals alike. The hotel is an essential part of the development of the property itself, creating a warm, sympathetic and human touch to the huge Stenna Flims complex.
